Mighty and Merciful God, Lord of heaven and earth, we step away from the rigorous demands of the day to acknowledge with wonder and adoration how great you are and how blessed we are to be able to communicate directly with you in prayer. Humbly and gratefully, we acknowledge that it is through your goodness, grace, and gifting that we have these bodies fit for serving our fellow man, these facilities to keep us sheltered from the elements, our minds with which to contemplate strategic matters and make measured decisions, and our hearts to make such decisions with loving concern for the welfare of the citizens of our great state. You are the provider; we are your stewards. You are the guide; we are the guided. You are Lord; we are servants.
I pray that each of these legislators––and all who assist them––will be granted the wisdom to make right decisions, the patience to work amiably with one another, the compassion to act in ways that truly benefit our people in the longer term and not just the duration of a legislative term, and the integrity to stand for their convictions; convictions that aren't for sale at any price. We do acknowledge that we are blessed beyond measure to live in the greatest state in the nation, and we pray that the actions of this legislative body will help preserve that legacy. We also acknowledge that there are multiplied millions of people around the world who would give anything to have the freedom and resources we enjoy, as they live in lands where access to food, clothing, and shelter is limited and where freedom is a far-fetched dream. We ask you to be merciful to them and to reveal to them that they have in you one full of grace and truth and a very present help in trouble.
Now, O Lord, may today be a day that is productive, joyful, and fulfilling, and may these devoted servants of Texas and Texans know and follow your guidance in such a way that our citizens are blessed and you are honored. And to you be the glory now and forevermore. Amen.

The speaker recognized Representative Leach who led the house in the pledges of allegiance to the United States and Texas flags.

HR 1159 - REMARKS

REPRESENTATIVE NAISHTAT:  Each year, the United States Holocaust Memorial Council designates an eight-day period as the Days of Remembrance, and this year's commemoration extends from Sunday, April 7 through Sunday, April 14. Members, the events of the Holocaust are inextricably linked to the obligation of people everywhere to uphold the cause of human rights. And as we, the people of Texas, recall this disturbing time in history, may we also be thankful of our duty to stand firm against all forms of injustice. I would like to bring up, with the speaker's permission, Representative Naomi Gonzalez to read the names of several victims of the Holocaust---families, names of people from El Paso.

REPRESENTATIVE N. GONZALEZ:  Yesterday, I had the honor to attend the El Paso Holocaust Museum and Study Center's ceremony to honor the victims and the survivors of the Holocaust, and we read the resolution that Representative Naishtat and I have joint authored together. And today, I would like to share with you the names of the survivors of the El Paso area that are still living. At one point, El Paso was home to over 80 survivors, and these are the remaining survivors that are still living: Tom Dula, Sara Hauptman, Guy Hauptman, David Kaplan, Henry Kellen, Samuel Kessell, Irene Osborne, Charlie Saul, Tibor Schaechner, Pete Shugart, Albert Rosenberg, and Helen Gluck.
By reading their names, we give and restore dignity to those individuals that suffered the atrocities during the Nazi government and their genocide and the collaborators that took part in the genocide, as well. This year's theme is to heed the warning signs, and by heeding the warning signs, we shall never forget what took place, and we must always remain vigilant that these atrocities never take place again. Mr. Speaker, I ask for a moment of silence for the victims---the men, women, and children that suffered during the Holocaust.
