Our God and Father in heaven, hallowed be thy high and holy name. We humbly approach your throne of grace and mercy at this hour, and thank you for the many blessings that you bestow upon us. We thank you for this day and for the breath of life that resides within us, and we are grateful for your providence that has guided us safely here.
We thank you for this body of legislators who have left homes and families to serve the will of the people of Texas. We pray that your hand of blessing will remain upon them and that you provide each of them with health, comfort, and wisdom as they make the decisions that are before them. We pray that this body will always seek the greater good and that they will be guided by the principles of virtue.
As King David long ago stated: "How good and how great it is for people to dwell together in unity." Let this body seek to be unified on the principles of righteousness and moral virtue. The apostle Paul in the book of Philippians stated: "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others." Let each consider the sacred trust that has been placed in their hands as they look out for the best interest of others and be guided by the divine principles of faith, equity, justice, mercy, and grace. For these many blessings we ask; and thanks we give in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
The speaker recognized Representative Klick who led the house in the pledges of allegiance to the United States and Texas flags.
