Friday, April 13, 2007 HOUSE JOURNAL — 55th Day 1945

ADDRESS BY REPRESENTATIVE RIDDLE

Members, a few weeks ago, a thousand people attended a dinner. The Houston area Alliance of Black School Educators were there for a reason, and they were there to award the Living Legend Award. The recipient of that award was Dr. Alma Allen, and Dr. Allen is not only a wonderful, compassionate, intelligent woman, but she is also a woman filled with humility. She doesn't even understand the concept of pride or arrogance, and she accepted this with a great deal of honor, and I have to tell you, class. One of her notes, and Alma, you didn't intend for me to see this, but her notes in her speech said, "the living legend in education simply means that you've lived a long time and you've worked a long time and you've worked hard."

I, well, have to tell you, Alma, you might have lived a long time, you might have really worked hard, but it takes a whole lot more than that. It takes character, and the love, and the sheer grit to do what you did in order to earn and receive the honor of this award. Members, I had to just stay on her and on her and on her, I said "you need to bring that award here so that your colleagues can see what you did." And you have no idea what kind of arm-twisting it took to get her to do this, and I know I'm embarrassing her now. But Alma, come up here so that we, your colleagues, your brothers and your sisters and all of us, every single one of us, all 149 of us want to tell you how much we love you and respect you.

ADDRESS BY REPRESENTATIVE ALLEN

Let me say thank you. That's almost as thrilling as when I first received the award. And so for them, and I hope they're watching today, I did not tell them that we were going to be doing this, but if they're watching today they would be honored that you did this, and I am thrilled. Thank you, very, very much.
